Spazju Kreattiv, in collaboration with children’s festival ŻiguŻajg, have engaged a collective of artists to research and present an interactive transmedia installation and photography about dichotomies found in Anton Manwel Caruana’s novel Ineż Farruġ.

Written in the 1800s, the novel is about a Maltese girl, Ineż, who disappears. Curated by Lisa Gwen Baldacchino and with the creative input of Elisa von Brockdorff and Pierre Portelli, the project includes workshops especially devised for youths interconnected with the installation and theatre project. Portelli is working on a project featuring stencils of some of the characters in the book, whereas von Brockdorff’s work consists of an animation and staged photos featuring different versions of Ineż. The interactive artworks, aimed primarily at 12-year-olds, seem to revolve around the central theme of identity  – the idea that anyone can be Ineż, as the artworks invite the audience to create and project their own interpretation of her.

Ideologies of national identity, family notions, love, faith and religion will be questioned and reinterpreted in a fully immersive environment.

■ The exhibition opens at St James Cavalier in Valletta on Friday and comes to an end on December 18. Various events and workshops will be happening around the exhibition during the ŻiguŻajg festival targeted at children aged nine and over. For more information, visit http://kreattivita.org .
