British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced yet another cut in his and his Cabinet’s salaries as well as a number of reductions in the salaries, perks and other benefits of ministers, directors and senior civil servants. Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti has just announced that he has renounced his salary. Both are perfect examples of how to lead their respective nations.

However, not many weeks ago the Maltese Prime Minister awarded himself and his Cabinet a €500-a-week salary increase while giving those Maltese people who are living on the breadline a €1.16 weekly cost-of-living increase.

This must be the worst fiscal example set by heavily blinkered politicians who are obviously not too concerned that Malta is heavily in debt, a debt that our children will eventually have to repay. It is also a poor example to the trade unions, which are constantly urged to keep demands for labour costs down so that Malta can remain competitive.

Have we gone totally mad? I am one of those who are totally dumbfounded.

Would it not be in the interest of the nation for the Maltese Prime Minister to swallow his political pride and follow the example set by his European counterparts?
