Employers have been urged to assess the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and recommend control measures.

The statement by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority was issued after 14 kitchen staff and waiters were hospitalised when they inhaled carbon monoxide at a wedding reception on Saturday.

Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of gaseous, solid or liquid fuels. Wherever there is an appliance that burns fuel, there is the potential for carbon monoxide generation.

It is highly poisonous even at very low levels.
