Malta’s Ambassador to France, Pierre Clive Agius, was invited to lead the ceremony for the revival of the flame on the grave of the Unknown Soldier under the Paris landmark the Arc de Triomphe.

This was the first time a Maltese ambassador had been asked to perform the role at the occasion, which was held on Sunday evening in the presence of a number of veteran soldiers and a representation of the Maltese community, among others.

In a moving ceremony, Mr Agius, accompanied by General Bruno Dary, laid a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

“I feel very special to have been invited to lead this ceremony which is solemn and unique – a ceremony which traces history to our Europe of today,” Mr Agius said.

“Being the first Maltese ambassador to be granted this honour was indeed a privilege. This ceremony is testimony of the excellent relations the embassy has cultured with the French authorities.”
