Electoral application forms connected to the May European Parliament elections could be sent by mail free of charge as stipulated by law, the Electoral Commission said yesterday.

The announcement was made in the wake of an Alternattiva Demokratika statement that complained Maltapost was refusing to process correspondence in connection with the registration, cancellation, correction or transfer of a voter, in breach of electoral law.

The Electoral Commission clarified that, earlier this month, an arrangement had been reached with Maltapost through which the commission would foot the bill for the relevant correspondence sent.

Nevertheless, AD insisted that Maltapost was asking interested parties to use the business reply service even if no such envelopes were available.

In its statement, the party had said that such a decision was unacceptable and accused Maltapost of “conditioning the registration of voters in Malta” for the elections on May 24.

According to AD, interested parties were told by Maltapost officials that they had not delivered the said applications because the company’s legal office was waiting for a written reply from the Electoral Commission on the matter.

It warned this was an urgent issue because the applications had to be submitted by March 29.

AD said it had reported the matter to the representative of the European Parliament office in Malta.
