Living in a road on the outskirts of Żabbar for our local council means being a second- if not a third-class citizen.

The refuse collection contractor, who by the way is paid to collect rubbish every day, not only does not turn up with a decent rubbish truck but he doesn’t even care to come over at all for days and sometimes weeks.

This problem has been going on as long as I can remember.

Repeated calls to the local council are always futile. We are repeatedly assured that the problem will be tackled but it never is.

It is always useless explaining the consequences to the council. Cats tear apart all our rubbish bags with all the rubbish being spread all over the street, nasty smell just behind our doors and flies and mosquitoes taking advantage of the lack of hygiene.

I honestly wonder why our council has never resolved this issue. Is it possible that they have no control on such a small thing? Do we really have to keep chasing them just because we live on the outskirts?

Is our vote in the council elections second-class as well?
