In January 2007, Mgr Paul Cremona sprang out of nowhere, charming everyone with his smile and humility. Five years on, Sarah Carabott took to the streets of Valletta to see what people think have been the Archbishop’s biggest challenges.

Vincent Buhagiar, 80

What with all the changes we have gone through – including the divorce issue – Archbishop Paul Cremona is doing a really good job. Thank God for his age, because he could take all these jolts. His biggest challenge was the divorce issue. But, in the end, that’s what the nation wanted and we have to move on with the times... whether it’s good or bad.

Archbishop Cremona’s best achievement is that he’s very close to the people and everyone loves him. I think the divorce issue was the biggest challenge that he handled very diplomatically. He took on board everyone’s opinion but, in the end, accepted the people’s will.

The Archbishop can get along well with the young and the old. His biggest challenge was the divorce issue and I think abortion will be his next big challenge. I think the Church handled the divorce issue really well.

The Archbishop is a nice person and he seems to be friendlier than anybody else. The divorce issue was his biggest challenge and the Church handled the issue from a religious angle. As a Catholic, I agree with what he and the Church said.
