I am not surprised that Joseph Abela’s views, repeated in his letter on “the possibility of marriage dissolution” (The Sunday Times, August 14) have, as he himself stated, fallen “on deaf ears”.

His argument has no logical or legal basis. He fails to distinguish between a declaration of nullity of a Catholic marriage and the dissolution of a valid Catholic marriage.

The latter is known as divorce. Therefore spouses who declare, according to Canon Law, that a Catholic marriage can only be declared null by a Church Tribunal, are in no way implying that they believe a valid Catholic marriage is dissoluble or that they intend to disregard their marriage vows.
