Fitness fanatics have voted Dame Helen Mirren the Body of the Year ahead of Cheryl Cole, Jennifer Lopez and Pippa Middleton.

The 66–year–old Oscar–winning actress scored 17.65 per cent of the vote, putting her well ahead of second–placed Elle Macpherson with just over 10 per cent. Kelly Brook was third, followed by Ms Lopez and Ms Cole.

Researchers polled 2,000 people for the survey, which was commissioned by the LA Fitness gym chain.

Its marketing director, Tony Orme, said: “Helen Mirren’s victory in our Best Body poll illustrates how, when it comes to body maintenance and well–being, age really is nothing but a number.

“It’s great to see the public celebrating bodies of all shapes and sizes, and proving that you really can look fabulous over 40 and 50. LA Fitness’ summer fitness campaign is all about championing people to get the body they desire and to be happy in their own skin.”
