The long awaited report by the EU’s anti-fraud office, which forced the resignation of former European Commissioner John Dalli, has been deposited in court.

The sealed document has however yet to be made available. The prosecution in the case against Silvio Zammit – who stands charged with soliciting a €60 million bribe to influence tobacco legislation under the portfolio of Mr Dalli – has requested that it be kept under wraps.

It argues that publishing the report would prejudice the police investigation into the Dalli case. Despite an order by Magistrate Anthony Vella for it to be exhibited, it has filed an application asking for this decision to be reconsidered.

Mr Zammit’s defence team has been insisting vociferously that the report must be presented in court.

The news that the document has been deposited came as the prosecution made another request to defer the case, scheduled for today. This is the second time in a week they have asked for a deferral.

The report will remain sealed in the magistrate’s chambers until a decision is made.
