The number of Britons visiting Croatia has soared this year, with the upward trend set to continue in 2014.

The southeast Europe country, formerly part of Yugoslavia, has welcomed 375,000 Britons in the first nine months of 2013 – a 25 per cent increase on the same period last year.

The figure was given by Tonko Rilovic, director of the Croatia National Tourist Office in London. He was speaking in Dubrovnik, where UK travel organisation Abta is holding its annual convention.

Mr Rilovic said airline Jet2 would be starting a new service from Edinburgh to the Croatian seaside resort of Pula next year, while British Airways and budget carrier Norwegian are set to increase frequencies between London and Dubrovnik. There are currently no direct flights between Malta and Croatia. Britain remains Malta’s biggest market for incoming tourists.
