On June 20, Pope Francis visited the tomb of Don Lorenzo Milani, a great educator of a free conscience. Milani was a staunch defender of conscientious objection to war for Italians.

In the words of Pope Francis, Don Milani was able to form in his students “a free conscience, capable of confronting the reality and being oriented in it by love, by the will to commit oneself with others, by taking charge of their toils and wounds, by fleeing from every egoism to serve the common good”.

Am I courageous enough to choose what is morally good even if the majority chooses what is morally wrong?

Am I brave enough to follow my own conscience faithfully and not letting anyone force me to act against it, especially in religious matters?
