A Norwegian man who falsely claimed he had been attacked and robbed of €800 was given a three-year conditional discharge.

Vetle Hansen, 21, who was staying at the Intercontinental Hotel in St Julians, pleaded guilty to filing a false police report at 7.30 p.m. on Monday claiming he had been attacked and robbed.

However, he later admitted he had filed a false report and that he had lost €650, Police Inspector Trevor Micallef said.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera conditionally discharged him for two years.

Lawyer Patrick Valentino appeared for Mr Hansen as legal aid.
