The Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations has welcomed the government’s plans for free childcare centres as from April 1.

It said the initiative would directly improve the quality of life of families, especially single parent households.

“More mothers will be less financially dependent on their spouses and on social benefits and will contribute to their own pensions while increasing their opportunities for improving their careers,” a statement said.

An increase in female labour participation improved Malta’s economic growth through the payment of tax and contributions and better sustainability of pensions. The confederation also urged the government to enact legislation to regulate childcare centres.
