Double Trap shooter William Chetcuti was this week elevated to the rank of Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) ambassador in recognition of the gold medal he won last Sunday during an ISSF World Cup shoot which was held in Beijing, China.

Chetcuti, 26, will represent the MOC in sporting matters for domestic and international assignments.

The decision of his appointment was taken by the MOC during an executive committee meeting which was held on Thursday.

“This appointment comes into immediate effect,” the MOC said in a statement, yesterday.

“It’s a just recognition to what Chetcuti has achieved and his contribution to the constant progress in local sport. He is now the Maltese sportsman with the best results ever in Olympic sport events.

“His achievements should spur all his peers within our fold.”

Chetcuti had skipped the first two shoots of this year’s World Cup but on Sunday held composure in difficult conditions at the Beijing Olympic Range to finish top of the leaderboard after qualifying with the fourth best result for the final barrage.

He returned home with his coach Jimmy Bugeja on Tuesday for a warm welcome by the local sporting fraternity.
