I would like to address this letter to Margaret Bianchi, in agreement with her letter Why Christians Need To Hold On To Their Roots (April 27).

She speaks out against governments who are bullying the Catholic Church. Even in Malta, where over 90 per cent of the population are Catholic, Catholics are being bullied. She suggests some conspiracy theory to do with eradicating the policies of the Church and diminishing its influence.

Proof of what she is saying is the fact that she wrote the letter in the first place. In the Holy Bible itself we find God telling us in no uncertain terms that women are inferior to men.

In Genesis 3:16: “Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you”. In 1 Corinthians 14:34: “Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says”. In 1 Timothy 2:11-12: “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.”

Even in the New Testament do we find such commands: “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the Church” (Ephesians 5:22–23). Such orders include submitting to your husband (Colossians 3:18) and being called the weaker partner (1 Peter 3:7).

However, even though God makes it plenty clear that women should know their place, nowadays we give women human rights which Mrs Bianchi spoke so much against.

We allow women to vote, to own property, to run companies, to be elected in government, to speak freely in church and, worst of all, to write letters to the editor.
