The interview with Carmena Fenech (August 18) made interesting reading. Ms Fenech is one of the many patients who, thanks to the latest government decision to alleviate the burden of overdue waiting lists for cataract operations at Mater Dei Hospital, has had her operation done at Saint James Hospital – with all expenses paid for by the government.

I was thus concerned to hear that Gozitan eye surgeon, Franco Mercieca, has to “ regularly cancel operations because he is not making it to Mater Dei Hospital on time as he is not granted priority boarding on the ferry though his patients are” (August 25).

I sincerely hope that his “problem” is resolved without undue haste.

However, I would have expected Dr Mercieca to mention that, apart from being a dedicated eye surgeon, he shall also be contesting the coming election on the Labour Party ticket. That could have put his story into a better perspective for The Times readers.
