Bernard Cassar Torregiani’s fine run at the U-18 ITF world ranking tournament at the Marsa Sports Club came to an end yesterday at the quarter-final stage.

The Malta junior champion, currently studying at a UK-based college after being granted a tennis scholarship, lost to Germany’s Luca Marquard who went on to reach the tournament’s final.

The tournament, held under the auspices of the Malta Tennis Federation, attracted over 100 boys and 100 girls from all over the world. They were vying to gain valuable points in a bid to improve their ranking position.

In the first round, Cassar Torregiani faced ninth seed Alexandros Vakouftsis. The 16-year-old came from behind to beat the world no. 564 Greek opponent 5-7 6-1 6-3.

Next up for the Maltese youngster was Britain’s Toby Cuttings.

Cassar Torregiani eased to a 6-4 6-2 win before meeting another UK player, Daniel Little, ranked 63rd in Europe. The match was a close affair with the Maltese prevailing 4-6 6-3 6-4.
