A man who was involved in a high-speed chase across Sliema on Friday was jailed for four months yesterday after pleading guilty to breaching the conditions of a previous release.

Joseph Sharfid, 36, from Valletta, appeared before Magistrate Gabriella Vella in relation to two separate cases.

He was first accused of breaching the conditions imposed when he was granted bail in relation to another criminal case. He pleaded guilty and was jailed for four months.

In March last year, Mr Sharfid was jailed for six months after also pleading guilty to breaching bail conditions. He was found in a garage in Marsascala where he was living with his then pregnant girlfriend, and their two children.

In the second case, Mr Sharfid was accused of a series of charges related to a car chase through the streets of Sliema.

He pleaded not guilty to injuring and resisting a police officer as well as to damaging a police car and drivingdangerously.

The police chased Mr Sharfid, who was wantedover breach of bail, whenhe refused to stop and atone point drove over apoliceman’s foot.

He was caught in Manuel Dimech Street, Sliema, though he tried to flee.

Sources said Mr Sharfid was wanted by the police because he was not living at the address provided to the court when he had last been granted bail. Instead, he was living in his car so police would not find him.

In relation to this case, the defendant was remanded in custody.
