Qormi 1
Young Stars 1

This KO final did not match the exciting fare provided by the same two teams during the league decider when seven goals were scored. In stifling conditions, marking was tight and midfield play dominated all the early exchanges.

Young Stars won a flurry of penalty corners early on but did not capitalise. It was not until the 16th minute that Qormi were awarded their first penalty corner but to no avail.

Chances were few and far between and after Qormi were awarded a penalty corner which bore no result, both teams created a few chances when inviting crosses were squandered.

Qormi started the second half on the attack and exerted most of the pressure on the Young Stars rearguard.

In the 43rd minute, as a result of a penalty corner awarded to Qormi, Andrew Camilleri, the experienced Young Stars defender, saved a shot on the dead ball line with the ball looping upwards and over the bar.

Qormi enjoyed territorial advantage from then on but Young Stars created a couple of half chances when Luke Borg Costanzi provided tantalising crosses, from counter attacks, which were not exploited by his team-mates.

The final whistle blew with no team managing to forge an advantage. The first period of extra-time continued in the same vein with neither side managing to break the duck but the excitement was left to the second half.

Qormi won a penalty corner and Juan Sarcia shot them ahead.

Young Stars reacted but with scant reward. Then, just as it seemed that Qormi had carried the day, and with only a minute remaining, Mark Camilleri slotted home to equalise and send this keenly-fought contest to a replay.

Umpires: Luke Busuttil Leaver, Manuel Imbroll.
