A 69-year-old Ħamrun worker died late yesterday afternoon when he ended up between the dumper he was using and a mechanical shovel during excavation works in Salina.

Sources said Paul Borg was working on the saltpans restoration.

The police said the mechanical shovel involved in the accident, which occurred at about 4.30pm, was being operated by the victim’s colleague, a 49-year-old from Dingli.

The police said it was not immediately known how the victim had ended up between the two vehicles.

The sources said, at one point, the mechanical shovel driver felt the dumper pushing his vehicle. He looked back but could not see his colleague so got out.

He saw Mr Borg trapped between the vehicles, having probably fallen out of the dumper.

Duty Magistrate Neville Camilleri was informed.
