Correspondent Martin Scicluna is absolutely right when he states that a ‘Brexit’ will be complex.

One often overlooked issue is that of Scotland, which has repeatedly expressed its desire – whatever the outcome of a referendum – to remain within the EU. In order for this to happen, post-Brexit, the Scots would have to reapply for EU membership, something which can only be undertaken by a sovereign State.

Therefore, in the first instance, Scotland would have to leave the UK in order to be able to apply to join the EU.

The Eurosceptic in me says that I am more than happy for Britain to take its place, alongside failed states such as Norway and Switzerland, in a merry band of brothers who realise that there is indeed life (and trade) outside the European Union.

The Shakespearean Iagoesque side of me is reluctant to say goodbye to the 56 Scottish Nationalist MPs who proved invaluable at the last generalelection in preventing Socialists from gaining access to No. 10 Downing Street.

As so often in life, it’s a case of being careful what one wishes!
