Alex Borg yesterday breezed into the Last 32 of the European Championships, currently being played in Daugavpils, Latvia.

The Malta champion, who topped Group C with three wins from four matches, defeated Bulgarian player Georgi Velichkov 4-0.

Borg, who, at the time of writing, had produced the highest break of the tournament – 133, will meet the winner of the Last 64 match between Cyprus’s Antonis Poullos and Sergiy Isayenko, of Ukraine.

In the women’s tournament, Roberta Cutajar has also made it through to the knock-out stages despite losing her final group match against Stefanie Teschner, of Germany, 3-2, on Saturday.

Cutajar ended the first phase level with Teschner and Poland’s Weronika Nowicka in fourth place but progressed thanks to her better frame difference.

Today, Cutajar will challenge Wendy Jans, of Belgium, for a place in the quarter-finals.
