In his letter ‘Cyclist safety’ (March 28), Jean Karl Soler indulges in his favourite hobby of bike-bashing, with his usual shotgun approach and lack of accuracy.

To clarify, neither the Bicycle Advocacy Group nor myself criticised any speed-calming measures on the new Kappara bypass cycle path. This is because mini orcas are a form of ‘soft segregation’. This is more suitable for roads of 50kph and below to prevent cars entering the cycle path.

The problem is that, at the time of writing, the design stopped cyclists doing that at the beginning of the cycle path too, forcing cyclists to remain in the carriageway. Not us, as Soler suggested.

Neither however, did we state that cyclists cannot travel at 30 or 40km/h on the cycle path, though I doubt they could or would want to. I suggest he tries it before commenting further. The good news is that even if Soler does not know what mini orcas are for, somebody at Transport Malta does and they have been repositioned.
