Sports people put their health and strength at the top of their priorities, but a new group is encouraging them to help other people’s health and chances of survival.

The Malta Blood Donation Support Group, founded by sports photographer Stephen Gatt, aims to encourage and educate people to give blood to the national blood transfusion service.

Alex Aquilina of the National Blood Transfusion Service welcomed the initiative and said sports people had a very important role in society as they are looked upon as role models.

National and Valletta goalkeeper Andrew Hogg is the campaign’s ambassador, and an educational programme in nurseries and schools will soon start with the aim of making students aware of the value of giving blood.
