Heavy hail has hampered the Lifecyclists’ campaign on their third day in Australia yesterday, making the first segment of the 1,900-kilometre bike ride from Brisbane to Melbourne more gruelling than expected.

The 208km ride through New South Wales from Glen Innes to Tamworth was as challenging as the cyclists’ first two days, which was beset by bad weather and degraded off-road routes.

Yesterday, the cyclists rode through heavy hail alternating with brilliant sunshine.

Three had to drop out due to injury, bringing the total number of withdrawals to seven out of 60 participants in the first three days.

The cyclists are raising funds for the Renal Unit of Mater Dei Hospital. Donations may be made by SMS or landline as follows: send an SMS on 5061 7370 (€2.33); 5061 8920 (€6.99); 5061 9229 (€11.65) or call 5160 2020 (€10); 5170 2005 (€15); 5180 2006 (€25).
