A man who threatened to set his former girlfriend’s house on fire, hurt her with a pair of scissors and even kill her was yesterday released on bail.

Roderick Vella, 25, of Mosta, yesterday pleaded not guilty to seven counts of threats, damaging the door of the girl’s new boyfriend’s house and disobeying police orders.

Mr Vella, who is unemployed, also denied threatening the couple on Tuesday at about 10 p.m. in St Publius Road, Floriana, threatening to set her house on fire and hurt her with a pair of scissors.

Police Inspector Pierre Micallef Grimaud and defence lawyer Anġlu Farrugia spoke to Magistrate Neville Camilleri at the Bench and discussed the case.

On returning, Dr Farrugia informed the court his client would be pleading not guilty to the charges and bail was granted to him against a personal guarantee of €5,000. It is in the magistrate’s discretion whether to order that a deposit is made too. The accused was also ordered not to speak to his ex-girlfriend in anyway.
