If, as Simon Busuttil has claimed during the PN’s activity in Valletta, today there is a “threat to democracy” in our country, that threat now has a name – Simon Busuttil.

I was persuaded about this by the leader of the Opposition himself when he made two highly irresponsible and shocking statements when addressing the crowd of Nationalist supporters in the capital.

The first shocking and most irresponsible was his statement that he would not be obeying the law on the registration of news websites. Such a statement would be considered shocking even if made by any ordinary citizen, let alone when it is said by a politician who happens to be the leader of the Opposition and who aspires one day to be prime minister.

Just imagine if such a statement were made by Joseph Muscat when he was leader of the Opposition. All hell would have broken loose.

A leader of a political party may say that, if elected to power, he would change or repeal a law. But while a law is in force, everybody is expected to observe it. More so politicians since they are expected to lead by example.

The second highly irresponsible statement was when Busuttil said he would not abide by the agreement signed between the government and Electrogas. Again, this statement proves how politically immature he is. Such a statement can only scare away both local and, more so, foreign entrepreneurs from investing in the country, creating jobs and helping improve our country’s economy, thus making our healthcare, pensions, social services etc. even more sustainable, knowing that Busuttil, if ever being in power, might ignore any contract signed with the Labour government.

No wonder many ask themselves whether this is what Busuttil and his extremist strategists are after – scaring away investment – because they cannot stomach the enormous successes this government is achieving.
