At this time of year I would be usually recommending food and wine pairings that you might want to serve to your dad on Father’s Day, either at a dinner party at home or at a full-blown meal in a restaurant.
But this year, I thought of making a few ‘lazy’ suggestions. By lazy, I mean giving ready-made food – now available in many supermarkets and restaurants – and a wine as a gift. The giver only needs to make sure that both the food and the wine are at the correct temperature for immediate consumption.
For dads who like white wines and fish, a chilled bottle of the medal-winning 2012 vintage Victoria Heights Chardonnay DOK Gozo and sliced smoked or marinated salmon are a great combination. If your father loves sushi, a chilled bottle of 2012 vintage Medina Vermentino Zibibbo DOK Malta is ideal.
If rosé wine is his preferred tipple, a chilled bottle of the dry 2012 vintage Medina Rosé Grenache DOK Malta slips down easily with ready, mixed seafood selections. Dads with a sweet tooth would surely love a chilled bottle of Delicata’s Ġellewża Rosé Frizzante demi-sec IGT Maltese Islands with a pallet of fresh seasonal Maltese strawberries.
As regards red wine, a good Italian salami or Spanish Serrano ham are great with a bottle of the spicy red 2011 vintage Medina Sangiovese IGT Maltese Islands.
If he likes cheese, look for a nice ‘gamey’ goat’s cheese (soft or hard) and serve with a 2011 vintage Gran Cavalier barrel-matured Syrah DOK Malta; or a nice chunk of authentic Parmigiano with a full-bodied 2011 vintage Grand Vin de Hauteville Shiraz Cabernet DOK Malta.
All these great food and wine marriages are guaranteed to make Father’s Day a treat.
