I refer to Victor Ciangura’s letter (February 29) where he reminds us of Floriana FC’s successes in season 1952-53. He states that the Greens won “six honours in one season”.

May I remind him that the only silverware Floriana won in season 1952-53, according to the Malta Football Association’s statistics, were the Championship, the FA Trophy and the Cassar Cup. None of the other trophies he mentioned are found in the annals of the Malta Football Association. The Infantile Paralysis Cup, the Schembri Sheild and the Poppy Day Fund Cup were not recognised by the MFA.

Valletta FC made a clean sweep of six honours in a season

Thus, the only team in the history of local football that claimed a clean sweep of six honours, organised by the MFA, was Valletta FC in season 2000/2001: the Championship, the FA Trophy, the Super Cup, the Super Five Cup and the Lowenbrau Cup. This unprecedented feat also includes the Air Malta Centenary Cup won against City’s rivals Floriana (3-1) in December 2000.

Their rock-like defence combined with their fast shrewd forwards were the major factors that enabled Valletta to make a clean sweep of honours at stake. A special mention goes to City captain Gilbert Aguis who, that season, also claimed the MFA Footballer of the Year award. The capital’s club also won the Premier Leagues Fair Play award for a memorable season.
