The stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 536 in the fourth quarter of 2009, to stand at 300,347, the NSO said today. 66 per cent of the 'new' cars on the road were actually imported second hand vehicles.

The NSO said 76.3 per cent of the vehicles licensed in the fourth quarter were private vehicles, while commercial vehicles made up 15.9 per cent . New licences issued during the fourth quarter of 2009 amounted to 4,334. Private vehicles accounted for 3,503 new licences, or 80.8 per cent of the total.

The majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles under 1300 cc. This class accounted for 1,638 new licences, while vehicles of between 1301-1449 cc accounted for 419.

Newly-licensed 'new' motor vehicles amounted to 1,474, or 34.0 per cent of the total, while newly-licensed 'used' motor vehicles came up to 2,860, or 66.0 per cent of the total.

During the quarter, 31 vehicles were exported and 1,103 were scrapped.
