Nineteen single parents have had their benefits withheld after investigations by the Directorate for Benefit Fraud and Investigation with the Social Policy Ministry.

Answering a parliamentary question by Chris Agius (PL), Minister Dolores Cristina said the directorate had concluded its investigation on 101 cases of single parents during January and February.

Answering another question by Carmelo Abela (PL), Minister Cristina said 159 people registering as unemployed were caught working in 2009. In the first two months of this year, the number was of 18.

An additional 12 persons were struck off the list in 2009 after failing to attend an inspection meeting or as a result of investigations made by the ETC.

All persons who had been struck off the list had the right to appeal to the National Employment Authority.

Mrs Cristina said legal steps would be taken against all persons, be they employed or self-employed.
