Emeritus President Ugo Mifsud Bonnici has reacted to the ousting by Parliament of his son, former Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici, with an edifying response, reflecting upon humanity’s free will.

“How do you want me to feel?” he told The Sunday Times when contacted yesterday for a reaction to last week’s developments which saw his son having to resign after a fellow Nationalist MP, Franco Debono, voted with the opposition in a motion of no confidence in the former minister.

“These things shouldn’t happen, but people are free to do what they want... God gave us freedom.”

“This is the price of freedom. Everyone does what they want. Sometimes they make mistakes and sometimes they do the right thing,” he added, pointing out that his feelings over whether Dr Debono did the right thing were obvious.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Emeritus President Eddie Fenech Adami preferred not to comment on the situation.
