Nationalist MEP candidate Therese Comodini Cachia has expressed incredulity at the setting up of grievance units in the civil service, saying the move “smacks of political motivation”.

Last Wednesday the permanent principal secretary published a circular indicating the setting up of units to handle complaints from public officers and employees who believe they have been victims of injustice in the last seven years.

“While it stands to reason that I declare myself in favour of redressing injustices, the way the move has been done will lack measures of redress that are objective, independent and impartial,” said Dr Comodini Cachia, a human rights lawyer.

She questioned whether the government would implement decisions already taken by tribunals and the Ombudsman’s Office on injustices in the civil service.

Dr Comodini Cachia also asked who would be appointed to the grievance units and under what criteria they could conduct a review.
