The government has handed out €24,000 to local councils and NGOs who will be organising activities on Car Free Day on September 18, a Sunday.

Six local councils and three NGOs will be making the most of the quieter streets and squares by holding sporting and cultural events and exhibitions.

The funds were handed out by parliamentary secretaries Mario de Marco and Chris Said.

The activities will be organised by the Mellieħa, Mġarr, Nadur, Kalkara, Ħamrun and Sta Luċija local councils and by Friends of the Earth, the Don Bosco Oratory in Gozo and the Inspire Foundation.
