A record 37 schools took part in this year’s ninth edition of the Malta Mathematics Olympiad. A team of students from St Benedict College Secondary School composed of Gerard Zammit Young, Nikolai Agius, Jean Claude Sacco and Jonathan Attard won the event, which was held at Maria Regina College Secondary School, Żokrija, Mosta. Teams from St Aloysius’ College and Stella Maris College placed second and third respectively.

The competition was open to Form 3 and 4 students from State and non-state secondary schools, with each school represented by a team of four students.

All 148 participating students also took part in an individual competition, which was won by Kathryn Mizzi from Gozo Middle School, with Gerard Zammit Young from St Benedict College Secondary School and Malcolm James Vassallo from the National Sport School placing second and third respectively.

The olympiad, organised by the Department of Curriculum Management of the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education, aims to foster problem-solving skills in young students in an atmosphere of healthy competition. It also aims to promote teamwork and promote a positive attitude towards mathematics.
