Originally overlooking Spinola Bay is the 17th century Palazzo Spinola, a three-floor Maltese Baroque architectural masterpiece.

Among its many uses it served as a residence, a military hospital, a shelter for the homeless and an art museum. Currently, it is being used as offices and a centre for diplomatic meetings.

This hidden gem, which over the years has lost its prominence, forms part of Paceville. Ironically, it was not included in any proposals of the recent Paceville masterplan, notwithstanding its historical importance and the remit that the consultants had to regenerate historical sites. It seems that only the Dragonara Gate came to their attention.

During a recent local council meeting I proposed the devolution of the palace to the local council of St Julian’s.

The aim of this would be to put the palace to better use and give back something to the community.   I proposed that in addition to the local council setting up office here, it could also act as a day or possibly a night shelter for our elderly, a public library, a community meeting place for NGOs working within our community and for holding cultural events or art exhibitions.

The proposal was approved by all council members. A formal request will be forwarded to the government for its approval or otherwise.

Hopefully, this overlooked gem will be returned once more to the community.
