This year marks the sixth edition of Ġenna ta’ Ġonna (Beautiful Gardens), an event in the Grand Harbour city of Floriana, on Sunday.

The town is also replete with historic buildings, churches and monuments of national importance. A good number of these sites are not usually accessible to the public, while gardens like the Sa Maison Garden and St Philip’s Garden lie hidden and undiscovered between the thick bastion walls.

Among this year’s attractions are: original documents dating back to the period of the Knights of St John in Malta and mummified friars at the Capuchin Friars’ convent; a chance to go up to Floriana’s parish church rooftop and belfry with the possibility to access the scaffolding for a close view of the works in progress on the church ceiling decoration by John Grima; a police dog show; a car show featuring 40 vintage vehicles; and entertainment at the Valletta Waterfront.

Visitors will also be able to access the Msida Bastion Historic Garden, an emergency operating theatre dating back to World War II, the newly-restored Wignacourt Tower and the Chapel and Refectory at the Archbishop’s Curia.

This is also a unique opportunity to visit the Floriana Underground Railway Station Tunnel, the only underground station of The Malta Railway.

Tours will depart from the Methodist church near St Philip’s Gardens’ gate between 9am and noon on the hour and again between 2pm and 4pm on the hour. Entrance is free and no booking is required.

A vintage bus will take passengers on a tour around Floriana with a guide pointing out important heritage sites along the way.
