In his letter ‘Help wardens’ (September 8), Victor Spiteri argues that wardens should be respected for their work. Writing as he did, I suspect he is a warden himself.

Firstly, I will not respect a warden more than I would respect any other worker because everyone is striving to live a better life.

Some weeks ago, wardens in Gozo preyed upon any vehicle they saw fit, dishing out several contraventions. This showed only too clearly how determined wardens are in their work. They constantly target drivers in areas where there is a great shortage of parking. And where on these islands is there adequate space for parking?

What is the chance of a motorist finding a parking space in Sliema and St Julian’s? Wardens can easily pick such areas.

What happened in Gozo takes place on a daily basis in Sliema, St Julian’s and Valletta whereyou are sure to see several wardens determined to let no ‘sinner’ go unpunished.

Wardens visit such hot zones frequently with zeal and, cunningly, even make a trip to areas where churches and pharmacies can be found.

Going back to the ‘kills’ in Gozo, realising that the majority of the tickets were unjustly issued, the authorities gave instructions for them to be immediately quashed.

If only these same authorities gave the same consideration to drivers booked in Sliema and St Julian’s.

So, I say, respect has to be earned.
