We shall soon be celebrating Independence Day. But what, exactly, are we celebrating?
One celebrates an event that should, normally, bring about unity, good and honest governance and well-being to all. Has this been achieved since 1964?
I do not only doubt it but my feeling is that this tiny island of ours is no better off than we would otherwise have been. We were better off when we were worse, as we often say. I would say that the same situation applies to each and every ex-colonialist State that, like us, achieved their much cherished independence. The result? We all know it. Everyone wants to get away from the turmoil that has befallen all these countries after having been left to their own devices.
We, ex-colonial dependents, are not fit to govern ourselves. The reasons are many. When all sense of morality, discipline and authority are lost there really is nothing to celebrate.
