While welcoming the efforts to encourage more recycling of household waste, the report ‘1.4 million kilograms of organic waste collected from various localities’ (September 3) leaves me confused.

The receptacles issued are not only small but are so-called ventilated. They are clearly designed for use indoors as the holes on the side of the bin would be an invitation to all sorts of vermin if left outside. Yet, we are told that they will lessen the odours in the house. I just cannot believe that an opened-sided container will allow less dissipation of smells than a fully enclosed one.

Furthermore, we are told that approximately half of the refuse in black bags is of an organic nature. Yet, the white bags issued are quite small. Since they are also supposed to be used for organic waste other than food, including garden waste, I would have thought that they should be of a larger size. If they are too small people will continue to put many organic items into the black bags.

Perhaps those responsible would enlighten us on their rationale for the new arrangements.
