The Jerma Palace site should be turned back into a public open space once the hotel has been demolished, Din L-Art Ħelwa have said.

In a press statement, the NGO said it backed calls made by some members of Marsascala local council to return the site, which also includes the 1614 St Thomas Tower, to its pre-1970s undeveloped state.

"Malta is over-built and the government should strive to create more open spaces for the public to enjoy, rather than developing every inch for commercial gain," the NGO wrote. "Coastal areas should be left free and unencumbered."

The Planning Authority has recently issued an enforcement notice for the Jerma Palace Hotel, which shut down in March 2007 and now lies in a dangerous state of disrepair

The site is now expected to be auctioned off in October, with experts having valued the site at €21 million.
