Despite the scaremongering and talk of doom and gloom, the British people have voted to leave the European Union, albeit by a narrow majority. It never happened in EU history, that a long-standing member State decides to leave.

By leaving, Britain is taking control of its destiny. It no longer has to submit to decisions by EU bureaucrats but will become a truly sovereign/independent State once more. It will also be saving a £20 billion annual fee, which money they can use to improve pensions and the national health service.

The imposition of trade tariffs by the EU, considered as a possibility when Britain leaves, will certainly have negative effects and it was wise of German industrialists to point this out and note that it would be counter-productive.

While it is hoped that common sense prevails, the EU is already in shambles, with or without Brexit. The uncontrolled flow of illegal immigrants and refugees, caused by unwise EU military interventions in Iraq, Libya and Syria, together with the deplorable colonialist mentality of the past, causing hardships and suffering on African nations, has made the EU bursting at the seams. It led to disagreement and confusion and the EU can no longer be considered as a harmonious union.

General dissatisfaction in a considerable number of EU members is becoming most evident. Who will be next after Britain leaves? Scandinavian countries will most likely hold referendums to decide whether to stay or leave.

The result would probably be more exits. France and Holland will follow suit. In Italy and Austria, where the old guard is being replaced by newer blood, they could be encouraged to do the same.

It can thus be truly said that Britain will lead the way out of the Union, a Union formed with the good intentions of maintaining peace, free trade and freedom of movement, but which turned out to be divisive, archaic, bureaucratic and damaging.
