Paralympics: Russian para-athletes will still be allowed to compete in this summer’s Rio Paralympic Games, the International Paralympic Committee has announced. Russian track and field stars were barred from the Olympics last week by the IAAF over doping concerns. But the IPC says the ban will not be extended to the Paralympics because the Russian Paralympic Committee operates as an entirely separate entity. Russia won 36 medals, including 19 golds, in the athletics programme at the London 2012 Paralympics, finishing second in the medals table behind China.

Rugby Sevens: Ignacio Martin scored a last-gasp try to fire Spain to a stunning 22-19 upset of top seeds Samoa in Monaco and secure the 12th and final qualifying spot for the men’s rugby sevens tournament at the Rio Olympics. Spanish players wept in joy after pulling off the shock at the Olympic repechage tournament on Sunday and the unheralded Europeans will now compete with global powers Fiji and New Zealand when the format makes its Games debut.

Golf: Long-hitting American Dustin Johnson, seeking major redemption after several near-misses in recent years, won the 116th US Open. In pursuit of his first grand slam crown, the world number six played clutch golf under intense pressure at brutally difficult Oakmont Country Club, finishing in style as he sank a short birdie putt at the last. Having negotiated the final seven holes under notice that he might be penalised for a rules infraction on the fifth green, despite being cleared by another official at the time, he was docked a shot after the round’s completion, with his score amended to a closing 69 for a four-under winning total of 276.
