Hibernians, the dominant force of women’s football on our shores, crowned another successful season in Malta FA competitions after beating Luxol Raiders 2-0 in the KO final at the Centenary Stadium, earlier this week.

The Paolites had just wrapped up their third successive national league, their 12th overall.

On Tuesday, they made sure of retaining the KO for a second year running with goals from Jade Flask and Ylenia Carabott to stave off the Luxol Raiders challenge.

The KO victory means Hiber-nians have made it a league and cup double for a second consecutive year.

Luxol, fourth in the league, offered still resistance at the start of the match but after conceding their first goal, it was all over them.

Just before the half-time break, Flask dashed strongly at the far post to head home Martina Borg’s corner.

Carabott rounded up a perfect evening for Keith Gouder’s team after the interval following a fine solo effort.

She ran half the length of the pitch, dribbled past a couple of defenders before unleashing a low drive past the goalkeeper.

At the end of the match, Hibernians captain Dionne Tonna received the cup from MFA director of Women’s Football Pierre Brincat to the delight of sizeable crowd on the terraces.

Meanwhile, the Tarxien Rainbows U-16 girls team also had an outstanding season in the Malta FA league and cup competitions after claiming the 2015-16 double without conceding defeat.

The young Rainbows crowned their campaign by lifting the KO following a close 1-0 over Gozo FC at the Għargħur football ground last weekend.

It was indeed a memorable year for the side led by Michaela Camilleri in her first year in coaching.

She was assisted by Marco Theuma and Louis Cutajar.

In a statement, the club also showed its appreciation to the sterling contribution of goalkeeping coaches Michael Church and David Farrugia, nursery official Mark Aquilina, the Tarxien Rainbows Supporters Club and parents for their continuous support.

The Tarxien nursery is already accepting applications from girls who would like to join their academy next season. An email with particulars may be sent to tarxienrainbows@yahoo.com.
