Cappella Sanctae Catharinae, Malta’s only male choir, has been invited by the Valletta local council and the Dominican Community of Valletta to present a concert of sacred music to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the founding of Valletta (1566).

When the Knights Hospitallers built Valletta in the aftermath of the Great Siege of 1565, they were building more than just a new city. It was to become a living memento of the chivalric ideas that the Order of St John embodied; in a way, it was for them a holy city, a new Jerusalem.

Urbs Beata celebrates this momentous event with music drawn from the period, related to the idea of a Holy City.

For this occasion, the all-male vocal ensemble will tomorrow be joined by a trombone quartet and percussion in a concert being held in the Basilica of Our Lady of Porto Salvo and St Dominic in Valletta at 7.30pm.

As with all CSC’s concerts, entrance will be free against a donation towards a worthy cause.
