The Maltese national team launched their commitments in a UEFA Under-16 Development Tournament with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Belarus, at the Centenary Stadium, on Thursday.

Andrè Spiteri, Kyle Mifsud and Ayrton Attard, from a penalty, scored the goals for the locals as goalkeeper Duncan Formosa saved a second-half Belarus penalty.

Formosa had come on for Rashed Al-Tuni after the latter went off injured after 20 minutes.

Malta, led by coaches Sergio Soldano and Ronald Vella, face Azerbaijan today at the Centenary Stadium (kick-off 10.30am).

The four-team development tournament, which also includes Liechtenstein, is part of Malta’s build-up for the UEFA U-17 qualifiers where Soldano’s boys will meet hosts Portugal, Scotland and Wales.
