I applaud Helena Dalli, Minister for Social Dialogue and Civil Liberties, for raising the issue of the burka in Malta.

On my travels to Muslim countries I have always conformed to their expected rules and regulations. Is it too much for us to expect the same courtesy in return?

I recently watched an excellent film called Suffragette that chronicled the extraordinary lengths women in Britain went through during the early part of the 20th century in order to gain the right to vote.

Emily Pankhurst would surely be appalled to see women walking the streets of London (and Malta) who are being rendered invisible by the burka.

If we truly wish to see Muslims integrated in Western societies then we should acknowledge that the burka is a symbol of isolation.
