I refer to the article titled ‘President’s charity in legal argument on fundraising’ (October 20).

The Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations points out that there is no legal or any other argument with the President’s Office on fundraising. It is inaccurate to say that the law, presumably the Voluntary Organisations Act 2007, “lays down all fundraising events must be covered by registration with the Commissioner”.

The “legal explanation from the Office of the President” referred to in the article is about article 4 of the Voluntary Organisations Act 2007, which requires government entities to obtain a letter of exemption from the Minister of Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties in cases where it intends to fund voluntary organisations that are not enrolled with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations according to the law.

This article and its interpretation is what the President’s legal adviser is putting in contention.
