A group of elephants with officials from the Conservation and Natural Resources Agency (BKSDA) have been helping the effort to put out fires in Indonesia, working in difficult terrain in order to curb haze and the number of hotspots in the wildlife preserve area of Padang Sugihan Sebokor.

The elephants were able to carry in the crews and equipment. The firefighters used a water pump to suck up water from the swamp to extinguish the fires in the local area.

The wider fires are spreading to new areas like Papua and are unlikely to be put out until next year, experts say.
